Is cable railing code legal in Virginia?
Yes, when it is installed to spec. Cable runs must be tensioned so a 4 inch sphere cannot pass between them, and the posts have to be engineered for that tension. Cable railing fails inspection when it is installed by a crew that treats it like a baluster substitute.
Does cable railing rust near the water?
We use marine grade stainless hardware on coastal installs. Standard stainless will show tea staining within a couple of seasons in salt air, which is exactly the Hampton Roads and Virginia Beach oceanfront condition.
